Want to make major transformational change to New Zealand’s transport? Do it with us.
Hi! We’re Abley and we’ve been looking for you. We’re a company that walks the talk – quite literally. We don’t just plan and design healthy street environments, we walk, cycle and scooter to work and for recreation – recognising the action we need to take for the climate, our communities and the environment. We do our bit to get people between a and b safely too – developing road safety strategies and guidance for the industry, as well as designing safer streets. We’re big picture thinkers who consider environmental, economic and personal wellbeing outcomes in everything we do.
We are proud to be leading the way on some of New Zealand’s largest sustainable transport and road safety projects. We’ve been at the forefront of New Zealand’s road safety strategy (Road to Zero), all stages of the Speed and Infrastructure Programme, the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena project and the Hobsonville Point development, just to name a few.
About the role
As a Transportation Modeller and a key member of the Strategy and Planning team, you’ll assist with creating safer transport environments particularly for some exciting projects we have in our pipeline. Our modelling helps our clients to understand the impact changes could have on our transport system. Changes in land use, network infrastructure, public transport provision, travel demand management and mode shift can all be modelled and analysed to support planning for growth. Our modelling solutions include strategic modelling, microsimulation, corridor signal optimisation and assessing a single intersection or access point. Recent case studies of the modelling work we do are located at https://abley.com/case-studies/how-essential-transport-data-supports-sound-transport-strategy-for-taupo-district-council/ and https://abley.com/case-studies/how-essential-transport-data-supports-sound-transport-strategy-for-taupo-district-council/.
You’ll also use your leadership skills to develop client relationships, build rapport with team members and contribute to the growth of the company through the successful delivery of projects.
We are looking for transportation specialists that are leaders in their field to join us on our mission. We’re looking for go-getters with:
- A proven track record nailing delivery of transport projects;
- An infectious passion for contributing to improving transport in New Zealand;
- Motivation to address complex problems like climate change and sustainability;
- Drive to push the limits of technical innovation.

Choosing the right person isn’t simply about results. It’s about values, relationships and the ability to bring that x-factor. So, let’s make sure you’re the right person for us. You need to be:
An experienced transportation modeller – you’ll be passionate about all things ‘transportation’ and your background will align with the work we do. You have a minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role. We are open to more experienced applicants.
Able to deliver results – you’ll need a successful track record in delivering quality work. All that experience you have using modelling software (e.g. Aimsun, Paramics, Cube, VISSIM or Tracks), supports you in producing high quality work.
A willingness to share your knowledge – you will share your technical knowledge with your team members in best practice and design software use.
Full of positive energy – we want people to feel energized, inspired and motivated to be around you, so bring your ‘glass half-full’ attitude to work. You will have a proactive ‘can-do’ attitude.
A brilliant communicator – you’ll be chatting to people in-person, via email or video conferencing, and in meetings. Your knowledge will inspire those you speak to. You’ll also be writing reports, business cases etc. so a good eye for detail is important.
A builder of strong relationships – it is incredibly important that you’re approachable and can foster positive relationships with those you work with, both clients and colleagues. You will be interacting with clients to deliver innovative design solutions so understanding their requirements is paramount.
The Important Bits
This role is full time and based in our Christchurch office.
Each of our offices are centrally located with public transport only a hop, skip and a jump away. If you’re a cyclist (like many of the Abley team) we also have great cycling facilities too.
Salary will reflect the skills you bring and the advantage you offer. For someone with 2-3 years' experience we expect this will be in the range of $65,000 - $80,000 per annum. If you are more experienced than this, salary will reflect that additional experience. We are a gender pay neutral organisation, offer a broad salary-benefits package and there is opportunity for you to become a shareholder – and join other employee shareholders in our 100% NZ-owned company.
At Abley we make waves in the technology and transportation spaces. We have several industry ‘firsts’ under our belt thanks to our team’s unrivalled abilities in spatial and data intelligence, software development, transportation planning and engineering. We are a tight-knit bunch and support each other to fast-track the career growth of everyone on our team. We provide fresh baking on Wednesdays, flexibility to help you achieve a healthy life-work balance (note the order) and enjoy some fantastic social occasions together.
